In January 2007, I was stopped on the streets of Tehran by members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, who claimed I had been filming them with my Mini DV video camera. They detained me momentarily and erased 27 seconds of my footage by recording over it—pointing the lens at the white interior wall of their headquarters. As Ava’s dress takes shape, so does her sense of autonomy, challenging Gillian’s idea of what recovery should look like. The tension escalates when an argument over therapy turns physical, leading to a moment of violence neither sister intended.
